• An instant classic: It was one of the most intense events of these 2026 Winter Olympics as the action flew across the ice for more than 60 minutes. Matt Boldy’s goal in the first period opened the scoring and Cale Makar tied it in the second. It was a frenetic final with both goalies making key saves.
• Eileen Gu goes golden: The Chinese star won her first gold of the Games and third medal overall in Milan Cortina as she defended her 2022 women’s freeski halfpipe title.
• A Games to remember: With drama, thrills, moments of hilarity and plenty of gripping medal action, these have been a Winter Olympics to remember. They come to a close with the closing ceremony which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Eileen Gu emotional over grandmother's death after halfpipe win

Eileen Gu of China has been a household name during this year’s Winter Games, especially after her women’s free ski halfpipe gold medal win earlier today.
Gu, who has received criticism for representing China instead of Team USA in the Milan Cortina Winter Games, arrived late to her press conference this morning and was visibly emotional.
In the moments after winning her third medal of the Games, Gu learned her grandmother had died.
Prior to Gu’s arrival in Italy, she was informed her grandmother was sick and that death “was a possibility.”
“I didn’t promise her that I was going to win, but I did promise her that I was going to be brave, like she has been brave, and that’s why I keep referring to this theme of betting on myself and being brave and taking risks,” Gu said.
Norway finishes on top, USA and Italy second and third in final medal count
After two weeks of excitement, competition at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games has come to an end.
Team USA finished just above Italy with 33 total medals, earning 12 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze. The American athletes capped off one of their most successful Winter Games with a gold medal in men’s ice hockey.
Norway swept the Olympic medal standings bringing home 41 total medals with Johannes Høsflot Klæbo at the helm. The Norwegian cross-country skier became the first athlete to win six gold medals in a single Games.
The closing ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Olympic rewind: Who remembers this celebration?

It feels like a long time ago now, but who else remembers this viral celebration from snowboarder Benjamin Karl?
After retaining his parallel giant slalom crown in Livigno on Sunday, the 40-year-old celebrated by ripping off his top, baring his chest to the frenzied crowd, before flexing his muscles and dropping facedown on the snow.
The impassioned celebration was quickly clipped and shared across social media, with thousands enjoying what initially looked like a release of unbridled, unrehearsed joy.
And while Karl was absolutely over-the-moon with his gold medal moment, the reaction was very much planned as a tribute to his hero, Hermann Maier.
“He was my one and only idol and I waited my whole career for the right moment to do it, in tribute to him,” Karl told CNN Sports.

Hughes on OT game winner: "It doesn't matter about the goal"

For Jack Hughes, today’s 2-1 overtime win over Canada in the gold medal game wasn’t about his game-winning, golden goal – it was about the brotherhood and the three letters on the front of their jerseys.
“Just an unbelievable team, unbelievable team win,” Hughes said following Team USA’s victory. “And we’re just so proud to be American and win. We’re so proud to win for our country, and you know, just win for the USA Hockey brotherhood.”
Canada commanded the ice for a majority of the game, slinging 42 shots at American goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
But, at the end of the day, Hellebuyck only let one shot get past him and Canada’s Jordan Binnington allowed two.
“Listen, they probably outplayed us a little bit tonight,” Hughes said. “Our goalie stood on his head though, and then overtime we both have skilled players, so anything can happen. We’re just so proud to win for our country.”
US wins hockey gold in overtime after epic final against Canada

It was the final that everyone wanted to see, but turned out to be better than anyone could have imagined.
Team USA produced one of the all-time Olympic performances to beat Canada in overtime to win its first men’s hockey gold medal since 1980.
After such a long wait for glory, this was perhaps the perfect way in which to do it – a performance of true grit and dedication.
The hero of the day was Jack Hughes, a player who quite literally wore the brutality of the final all over his face. He produced the golden goal winner with blood dripping from the broken teeth in his mouth.
And while Hughes will take the headlines, goalie Connor Hellebuyck was equally as heroic, keeping Team USA in the game amid a landslide of pressure.
“That’s American hockey right there,” Hughes told NBC broadcasters. “The USA hockey brotherhood means so much.”
The tone was set in the opening seconds, with the game being played at such a ridiculous tempo from the first puck drop. The pace never really let up.
It was Team USA which started better, pinning Canada back in its own half and displaying a physicality that its rival initially struggled to deal with.
The first goal soon followed with Matt Boldy putting the US 1-0 up with the first shot of the game. It was the moment when US fans really started to dream.
But after regrouping in the first break, it was Canada’s turn to dominate. It forced the US to dig deep in a second period that was simply one-way traffic. But despite spurning multiple chances, the Canadians eventually tied the game when Cale Makar fired a near-perfect shot into the net.
It was more of the same in the third period with US goalie Hellebuyck continuing to produce heroics in the net. Out of all his 41 saves, his stop to prevent Devon Toews was undoubtedly the most remarkable – although the Canadian defenseman won’t want to see that miss again.
The utter chaos did somewhat take away from the quality, but no one watching really cared. It was raw, it was passionate, and it was everything people wanted to see and more.
The US continued to defend with everything it had, throwing sticks, hands and even bodies in the way to somehow force OT.
Then came the magical moment from Hughes, capitalizing on some space to send his teammates – and a nation – into a frenzy of celebration.
Those celebrations included a touching tribute to Johnny Gaudreau, the NFL player killed alongside his brother in 2024. Gaudreau’s family was at the final, and his kids were taken onto the ice for a photo with the winning team.
In pictures: Jack Hughes the hero as Team USA wins gold

The US men’s hockey team won Olympic gold Sunday for the first time in 46 years, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime.
Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal 1:41 into the extra period, taking a cross-ice pass from Zach Werenski and shooting it between the legs of Canada goalie Jordan Binnington.
The victory comes on the anniversary of the famous “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. That was the last time the US men won gold at the Olympics.

White House mocks Justin Trudeau on X following US hockey victory
After Team USA men’s hockey beat Canada in overtime for a coveted Olympic gold, the White House took to X in a series of posts to extol the historic win.
In one post, the White House mocked an X post by former Canadian Prime Minister last year.
“You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau wrote after the Canadians won the 4 Nations Face-Off over the USA in overtime in 2025.
The White House mockingly responded with an image of a bald eagle pinning a Canadian goose to the ground.
USA hockey squads sweep Olympic tournament
For the first time in history, both the USA men’s and women’s hockey teams have won Olympic gold at the same Games.
To make it even better, both wins were against longtime rival Canada in thrilling 2-1 overtime victories.
The women’s squad won its third Olympic gold after coming from behind with a clutch golden goal from Megan Keller.
“The powerful thing about sport and the Olympics is that it’s everybody uniting together,” Keller said at the beginning of the Games. “It’s an honor for us not only to represent our country, but our family, our friends, everybody who had a hand in getting to this level.”
Prior to the gold medal game, the US women led opponents 31-1 and had five consecutive shutouts, setting a record for longest Olympic shutout streak.

CNN’s Coy Wire spoke with the USA women’s hockey team about what winning the gold medal in the Winter Olympics means to them. Forward Taylor Heise described that it’s the team’s energy that makes playing the sport “the easiest it’s ever been.”
The men then added to Team USA’s hardware to close out the 2026 Winter Games thanks to a Jack Hughes overtime score and 41 saves from Connor Hellebuyck.
For the first time since 1980, the men’s team will walk away with a gold medal.
“The USA hockey brotherhood means so much,” Hughes told NBC broadcasters following the win.
Coaches do not get medals at the Olympics

Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan’s moment of glory is a little bit different from his athletes on the ice.
After a 2-1 overtime win against Canada in the gold medal game, the Team USA roster received its silverware — but Sullivan didn’t.
Athletes are the only ones who receive medals in the Olympics (Summer or Winter) due to varying coaching eligibility rules across sports and, of course, expenses.
While Olympic coaches don’t walk away with a gold medal of their own, American coaches do receive recognition in an awards program hosted by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
Team USA brings Johnny Gaudreau's kids on the ice for team photo
Not a dry eye in the house.
With gold medals around their necks and American flags draped over their shoulders, Team USA brought Johnny Gaudreau’s children down to the ice for a team photo. The Americans held Gaudreau’s jersey for the playing of the national anthem in Milan.
Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were hit and killed by a drunk driving in August 2024 while cycling in New Jersey.
The Gaudreau family was in attendance tonight for Team USA’s monumental 2-1 overtime win over Canada in today’s gold medal game.
"WOW!": President Trump praises Team USA after hockey gold medal
President Donald Trump has congratulated the USA men’s hockey team following its dramatic overtime win against Canada.
“Congratulations to our great U.S.A. Ice Hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD. WOW!” Trump posted to his Truth Social account.
While Trump wasn’t in attendance for the historic win, FBI Director Kash Patel was seen at the game and he will also surely be delighted at the result.

Canada looks sickened by silver

Team Canada looks absolutely nauseous getting their silver medals.
Like someone handed them garlic to put around their necks.
I passed one fan in staircase on way near ice and he summed it up: “I have no words.”
Who is Jack Hughes? Meet Team USA’s overtime hero

Jack Hughes made history tonight, becoming an American hero with a game-winning golden goal in Team USA’s 2-1 overtime win over Canada.
For the first time since 2014, NHL players returned to Olympic ice and the New Jersey Devils center had himself a tournament.
Hughes had four goals and three assists in this Olympic run, scoring two in the American’s semifinal win against Slovakia.
“This is all about our country right now,” Hughes told the NBC broadcast following the win. “I love the USA, I love my teammates – it’s unbelievable.”
With two cracked front teeth from a Sam Bennett high stick in the third period, Hughes couldn’t help flashing his new smile.
Team USA will bring home its first men’s hockey gold medal since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team. Today marks the 46th anniversary since Team USA defeated the Soviet Union, 4-3, during the height of the Cold War.
“That’s American hockey right there,” Hughes told NBC broadcasters. “The USA hockey brotherhood means so much.”
It’s all red, white and Hughes in Milan.
The state of Michigan wins the gold medal
The great state of Michigan should take a big portion of the credit for Team USA’s gold medal victory in this game against Canada – and in these Olympics writ large.
Michigan sent six players on the men’s team to the Olympics, the most of any state. Jack Hughes, the hero in today’s overtime win, is from Canton, Michigan, as is his brother Quinn Hughes, who scored the goal to defeat Sweden in OT in the quarterfinals.
Finally – finally – Canton is famous for something other than having Metro Detroit’s IKEA location.
Other players from the Great Lakes State: Goalie hero Connor Hellebuyck, Dylan Larkin, Connor Kyle and Zach Werenski.
Plymouth, Michigan, is also home to USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, through which many of these players came.
Perhaps, Michiganders might try to steal the “Golden State” nickname from California.
"Our best player tonight": Connor Hellebuyck delivers gold medal game masterclass

Jack Hughes might have scored the winning goal in the final, but Team USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck is the man of the moment.
The Winnipeg Jets goalie made save after save after save after save, and despite the Canadian onslaught, the 32-year-old only conceded one goal.
And even the scorer of the go-ahead goal agrees.
“He was our best player tonight by a mile,” Hughes told the NBC broadcast after the game.
I don’t think Hellebuyck will ever have to buy a drink again.
Here's the golden moment from Jack Hughes
In case you missed it (how could you miss that?!), here’s the moment Jack Hughes won the US’ first gold medal in Olympic men’s hockey since 1980.
Bedlam inside the Milano Santagiulia
It is bananas in here after Jack Hughes’ winning goal.
Americans are losing their minds and Canadians are too stunned to leave. Jack Hughes is skating around with a flag and has been absolutely bum rushed on the boards.
The US hockey squad is skating around now with Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey to applause everywhere.
American flags are flying, Team USA celebrates
The scene couldn’t be more perfect than this if you’re an American hockey fan.
Helmets, gloves and sticks went flying. Connor Hellebuyck, draped in the stars and stripes. Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey hoisted in the air.
It’s moments like these that give fans chills and make watching sports worth it.
Team USA has won its first Olympic gold medal since 1980.

Team USA scores the crucial overtime goal to seal the win after a thrilling, instant-classic gold medal game!
Jack Hughes has written his name into hockey history with the dramatic goal to seal the United States’ first gold in 46 years.
It’s heartbreak for Canada, which was on top for so much of this game. But when it’s three-on-three, anything can happen.
The Canadians gambled, leaving a three-on-one and Team USA took advantage.
Zach Werenski found Hughes who made no mistake with the finish.
