A versatile and ubiquitous ingredient found in everything from food products to cosmetics, palm oil has cemented its place as a global commodity. Fueled by international demand, production for the odorless vegetable oil—which is rich in Vitamin E and contains no trans fat—has increased tenfold since the 1960s. However, the environmental toll of oil palm plantations has raised profound concerns. In response, Malaysia is increasingly pushing towards sustainable practices in its palm oil industry, aiming to balance economic growth with responsible environmental stewardship.

Recognizing the need for sustainability across environmental, social, and economic dimensions, the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme was introduced in 2013 and made mandatory by the end of 2019. The national scheme, with principles designed to complement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030, has set a target to certify 95% of the oil palm planted area in Malaysia by the end of 2024.

In order to enhance biodiversity protection, the Malaysian Ministry of Plantation and Commodities has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining forest cover at 54%, an increase from 50% pledged at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. This target is supported by a national initiative to map oil palm plantation coverage in the country, aiming to cap the total oil palm plantation area by banning new plantations and restricting the conversion of Permanent Forest Reserves (PRF) for agricultural purposes.

Malaysia’s ongoing efforts are driven by environmental objectives similar to those of international standards, such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which came into force in 2023 to ensure that goods imported into the EU—a major export market for Malaysian palm oil—do not contribute to deforestation. Geolocation mapping and traceability have been identified as areas for improvement, but Malaysia’s progress has been recognized by the EU Commissioner for Environment and Fisheries. At an April 2024 conference on the EUDR and MSPO standards, Virginijus Sinkevičius commended Malaysia’s efforts to reduce deforestation and its commitment to producing certified sustainable commodities.

Further showcasing Malaysia’s proactive approach to environmental responsibility and sustainability, listed companies are now required to comply with Bursa Malaysia’s sustainability reporting standards, and many in the industry have also implemented the No Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation (NDPE) policy, an international framework that ensures environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices in the production of commodities including palm oil.

The Future of Agriculture

Innovation in Malaysia’s palm oil production is driving the industry toward sustainability by improving production efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of plantations and palm oil processing. In 2021, the government allocated $14 million for research into agricultural mechanization technology in the palm oil industry, including the use of drones, robots, and sensors in the harvesting process to boost productivity.

Tools like Geographic Information System (GIS) technology allow for precise mapping and monitoring of plantations, while blockchain technology in pilot projects intends to create traceable supply chains from plantation to consumer. The development of affordable artificial intelligence further enhances sustainability efforts and bolsters income for smallholders by optimizing production through predictive insights, reducing resource use while maximizing yields.

Advancements in technology are also being made to make palm oil production more sustainable. Biogas generators at palm oil mills harness methane from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), which is then converted into electricity. In addition to methane capture, the government is exploring the use of electrochemical methods to treat POME, making the waste safe and recyclable within mills.

Continued research and development by stakeholders includes innovations such as the high-yield GenomeSelect™ oil palm seed and the application of bio-based enzymes to enhance oil recovery during the milling process, representing a concerted effort to ensure the palm oil industry’s future is both sustainable and profitable.

Catalyst for Growth

Palm oil is a vital economic driver for Malaysia and the country’s second largest employer after the government, providing jobs to over three million workers across the supply chain, including about 500,000 smallholders. This widespread employment supports both rural communities and contributed nearly 3% to the nation’s total gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023.

Further bolstering the industry’s impact are government initiatives and sustainability programs like the MSPO certification, which promote better farming practices and empower smallholders to participate in global markets. The country’s palm oil exports are projected to expand by 3.3% year-on-year in 2024, while the export value of palm oil and palm-based commodities is predicted to increase by 4.3%, contributing to the socio-economic growth of the country.

The forward momentum continues as the country’s palm oil industry plays a pivotal role in driving investments into palm oil byproducts, including biomass, which the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry has highlighted as a viable feedstock for renewable energy, advanced biofuels, and other green industries. According to the National Biomass Action Plan, these initiatives are projected to create around 33,000 jobs, attract $1.6 billion in investment, and contribute $4 billion to the economy, highlighting their significant potential for economic impact.

As the palm oil industry evolves, significant strides are being made to transform its reputation from one of environmental concern to a model of sustainable growth. Today, Malaysia is home to one of the world’s largest producers of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) and the first in the industry to have its net-zero goals approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). With a clear shift towards sustainable practices, Malaysian palm oil is poised to remain a crucial economic driver while reinforcing its role in a greener future.
