Navy blue tie —
The necktie is the centerpiece in men's fashion today.

Colored tie —
A solid-colored tie is another must. But, "choose your colors wisely," Wilcox advises.

Graphic tie —
Rather than express yourself in color, you can express yourself in graphics, Wilcox says.

Silk knitted tie —
Although it's not essential, a simple black, navy or dark knitted tie is a great addition if you don't have one already. It should be about 2 1/2" wide.

Skinny ties —
Your tie should be age- and fashion-appropriate, Wilcox says. "Skinny ties, for me, are a bit of a faux pas," he says.

Funny ties —
"No matter how subtle they may be intended to be, they are neither stylish or funny," says Wilcox. "The same goes for cufflinks."

Ties that are 'too much' —
Don't wear a tie that overpowers your outfit, Wilcox says. Avoid ties that have too much color, too much pattern or both.
