GOP Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is seeking a second full term and will be heavily favored to advance to November. Her likely Democratic opponent is Scott Colom, an elected district attorney in eastern Mississippi.
There are four congressional districts in Mississippi – three represented by Republicans and one represented by Democrat Bennie Thompson, who has served the western 2nd district since 1993. Thompson is one of several Democrats this year facing younger primary challengers who argue it’s time for a new generation of leaders. Only he and Rep. Mike Ezell, who represents the coastal 4th district, face any opposition for renomination.
