A crowded field of candidates is competing in the nonpartisan race to elect Houston’s next mayor, including Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee, a 15-term congresswoman, and John Whitmire, a longtime state legislator. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a December 9 runoff. Incumbent Sylvester Turner, a Democrat, is term-limited.
