From CNN, I'm Afoma Dike with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, April 8th.

'The White House says a two-week ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran will continue if the Strait of Hormuz is open. That's after Iranian media reported that Tehran was preventing oil tankers from passing through the critical shipping lane again because of what Israel has called its largest coordinated strikes on Lebanon since the start of the war. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed those reports in today's briefing.

That is completely unacceptable and again this is a case of what they're saying publicly is different privately. We have seen an uptick of traffic in the Strait today and I will reiterate the President's expectation and demand that the Straight of Hermous is reopened immediately, quickly and safely. That is his expectation and it has been relayed to him privately that that is what's taking place.

'The Israeli military says it was targeting Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and that its attacks there would continue. The White House reiterated that Lebanon isn't part of the temporary ceasefire deal. Lebanon's health ministry says strikes have killed at least 182 people and wounded more than 800 others. Meanwhile, Leavitt says negotiations with Iran enter their next phase this weekend in Pakistan. President Donald Trump is sending Vice President J.D. Vance with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner also taking part.

Are you pleading guilty voluntarily to have your own free will? Yes.

'He admitted in court that he strangled eight women and dumped their bodies on Long Island, New York. The guilty plea represents the end of a case that dates as far back as 1993 and took decades for investigators to solve. The 62-year-old architect has been in custody since July 2023. He previously pleaded not guilty to the murders of seven women. Four of their bodies were found on Gilgo Beach in 2010. As part of the plea, Huermann also admitted to killing an eighth woman whose murder he had not previously been charged with. Prosecutors asked a Suffolk County judge for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Huermann is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17th.

'A woman dubbed the Ketamine Queen has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for providing the lethal dose of ketamine that ultimately led to Friends star Matthew Perry's death. Prosecutor say Jasveen Sangha ran a quote, high-volume drug trafficking business out of her North Hollywood home, and that she marketed herself as a dealer who sold exclusively to A-List Clientele. She and four others were charged in August 2024 in connection to Perry's death. A year later, Sangha agreed to plead guilty to five federal criminal charges. The four other defendants also struck plea deals with federal prosecutors.

'The Justice Department says Pam Bondi won't appear for her deposition next week in the House Oversight Committee's Jeffrey Epstein investigation, given she's no longer the U.S. Attorney General. The assistant attorney general asked for Bondi's subpoena to be withdrawn in a letter obtained by CNN to the committee's chairman, James Comer. However, the Republican-led panel is still looking to move forward with her deposition. Bondi was subpoenaed last month with five Republicans joining Democrats in the effort. Her standing in the Trump administration was soured in part by her stumbles in handling the Epstein investigation.

Hawaii is facing another major flood threat two weeks after its worst flooding in 20 years. CNN's lead meteorologist Brandon Miller explains.

00:03:42
That's right Ifeoma. This will be Hawaii's third Kona Low over the course of the last month. Now a Kona low is the name given to these specific type of storm systems that come from the south and west of the islands and bring heavy rain and strong winds to the normally dry parts of Hawaii. Now a few places could record multiple months worth of rain over just a few days. So a flood watch is in place for all of Hawaii through Friday afternoon, alerting for the potential for significant flooding and landslides. It looks like the westernmost islands, Kauai and Oahu, will bear the brunt of the flood potential with this storm. And Oahu also faced the worst a couple weeks ago, when hundreds of people had to be rescued from floodwaters that damaged hundreds of homes.
