'The man accused of trying to attack top administration officials Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner appeared in federal court for the first time today. 31-Year-old Cole Tomas Allen was charged with attempting to assassinate the president as well as other counts. He's accused of running through secret service security armed with a shotgun, pistol, and knives. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says the suspected shooter fired one shot.

This man was a floor above the ballroom with hundreds of federal agents between him and the president of the United States. The Department of Justice approaches incidents like this with urgency and clarity of purpose. Violence has no place in civic life.

He was running right in my directions, magazine clips around his body. Had you already climbed all the stairs? I had already climbed the stairs. So you were at the same level as him? He dropped right at my feet. When you say he dropped right your feet. He fell face first.

'According to officials, Allen took a train to D.C. From California where he worked as a part-time tutor. Prosecutors asked to detain Allen before trial, and a detention hearing was set for this Thursday. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt declined to rule out operational changes to President Donald Trump's schedule following Saturday's shooting, including the prospect of ensuring he and the vice president not attend events at the same time. She also sought to shift blame for a rise in political violence to Democrats. Also, Trump is using the shooting to push for his controversial White House ballroom project, which includes a bunker underneath it.

More news coming up, including why Trump is calling for ABC to fire Jimmy Kimmel.

'President Trump has called on ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel because of a joke he made on his show last week.

Our first lady, Melania, is here. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.

Melania Trump released a statement before her husband did implying that Kimmel should lose his job over the same comments. Kimmel's monolog was on Thursday, two days before the attack at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. During a mock version of the gala, he delivered a series of jokes aimed at the president and his family. The Trumps' criticism sets up a major free speech stress test for ABC's parent company, Disney. Representatives for ABC and Kimmel haven't responded to CNN's requests for comment.

'Calls are growing on Capitol Hill for Congress to finally pass funding for the Department of Homeland Security after Saturday's shooting at the GALA, which is raising security concerns. DHS has been shut down since mid-February. Federal workers, including Secret Service agents who protected the president in the shooting, are preparing to miss a paycheck over the bitter standoff. Today, House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected a bill that the Senate passed last month to fund most agencies at DHS, signaling that the shutdown will drag on for now. He spoke to CNN's Manu Raju.

It has some problematic language because it was haphazardly drafted, and so we've stated our objections about that very clearly.

00:03:15
So you will never put that on the floor
House Speaker Mike Johnson
00:03:17
We have a modified version that I think is going to be much better for both chambers.
00:03:22
Republicans in both chambers are trying to pass a bill to fund ICE and Border Patrol with only GOP votes through the budget reconciliation process. But this will take several weeks.

'King Charles and Queen Camilla are now meeting President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House. They kicked off their four-day state visit on Monday to mark the 250th anniversary of America's independence from Britain. It's the first time a reigning British monarch has visited the White house since Queen Elizabeth in 2007. The visit comes as US-UK relations are strained by the war in Iran, with Trump slamming the UK Prime Minister's refusal to help the US militarily. The UK government is hoping that Charles' visit could ease tensions.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a new U.S. House district map for the state. CNN's Jeff Zeleny explains.
ABC Late Night Host Jimmy Kimmel
00:04:19
The balance of power in Florida right now is 20 Republicans and eight Democrats. The proposed map that Governor Ron DeSantis is going to ask his Republicans in the Florida legislature, where he has a supermajority, is to effectively change that dramatically and give Republicans four more seats, take away four seats from Democrats. And so the proposed changes there would affect Democrats in South Florida. The reality is Governor Ron DeSantis wants to give the Trump administration something that they want, and he does not have many constraints on him.

A Florida senator said he expected a key state Senate committee to vote on the map tomorrow. The measure moves to the Florida House once it clears the Senate. The special session is slated to end Friday. That is it for us. We're back tomorrow morning.
