  • At 17 weeks pregnant, Emily Waldorf learned from doctors at the Arkansas hospital where she was employed that a miscarriage was imminent and that she faced a serious risk of infection. She exhausted every option to convince doctors that her medical emergency warranted treatment despite the state's abortion law, but the hospital left her in limbo for five days, pointing to Arkansas' abortion ban. As her health continued to decline, her sister Elizabeth Rowe contacted Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders seeking intervention, only to be told to hire an attorney. Emily then boarded an ambulance to travel 235 miles to Kansas in order to receive the care she needed. She has since joined three other women and a physician in a lawsuit against the state of Arkansas.

Full Sturgeon Supermoon setting behind Rocca Calascio Castle is seen in Calascio, Italy, on August 21st, 2024. The Full Sturgeon Moon is a traditional name given to the full moon in August by Native American tribes. It was named after the sturgeon fish, which were most readily caught during this month in the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, called perigee. On August 19th and 20th, 2024, the full moon was at a distance that qualifies it as a supermoon, making it a particularly impressive sight. This full moon was also a "Blue Moon": a seasonal Blue Moon is the traditional definition of a Blue Moon and refers to the third full moon in a season that has four full moons according to NASA.

  • A health worker monitors visitors arriving at the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory, National Biomedical Research Institute (INRB) in Goma, on May 19, 2026. The World Health Organization on Tuesday voiced concern about the "scale and speed" of an Ebola outbreak that has killed an estimated 131 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and warned it could be lengthy. The UN health agency has declared the surge of the highly contagious haemorrhagic fever an international health emergency and called an urgent meeting on the crisis. No vaccine or therapeutic treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola responsible for the outbreak, which has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa in the past half-century.
