Emergency teams in Colombia have been desperately searching for survivors after the country experienced its worst earthquake in decades on Monday.

At least 273 people were killed in the 7.4 magnitude quake, which damaged homes, schools, bridges and airports across a large swathe of the country. Hundreds of people still remained missing as of Thursday.

The epicenter of the quake was in San José del Palmar, about 240 kilometers (149 miles) west of the capital city of Bogotá. Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella — who only took office last week — declared a state of national disaster to mobilize extra resources to the most affected regions.

After receiving an ankle monitor during an immigration check-in, Haitian immigrant Monsanto Maler becomes emotional and collapses outside a facility in Blue Ash, Ohio, on Friday, August 7. Vilès Dorsainvil, one of the men comforting Maler in the photo, is co-founder and executive director of the Haitian Community Help and Support Center in Springfield, Ohio. He said many Haitians have felt humiliated by the ankle monitors authorities are now issuing. Maler has lived in the United States since 2023 and said he left Haiti because he didn’t feel safe, according to photojournalist Carol Guzy. “He was confused,” Dorsainvil said. “He was asking us how long he would need to wear it. We couldn’t answer this.”
