Masked members of the White nationalist group Patriot Front marched through Washington, DC, on Saturday, July 4, injecting a display of extremism into celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday.
A photograph of the group taken by Cheney Orr for Reuters has attracted global attention. It shows a woman riding the metro, surrounded by Patriot Front members.
“As I photographed members of the group, I noticed the woman you see in this image sitting alone among them,” Orr said.
Patriot Front is considered one of the most active White nationalist groups in the country, according to experts interviewed by CNN, the group’s social media activity and the steady drumbeat of its public demonstrations. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated Patriot Front a hate group. Its members frequently appear in matching uniforms and masks, often carrying riot shields and flags at choreographed marches in cities across the US.
On Saturday, as they marched in the nation’s capital, they shouted slogans including “Life, liberty, victory” and “Reclaim America!”
