A lone gunman killed four people and injured a fifth Monday before fatally shooting himself at a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan.
It was the deadliest mass shooting in New York City since 2000.
The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, used an assault rifle, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday.
Among those killed in the attack was New York police officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh who had worked in the police force for three and a half years. He was off duty at the time but working security in the Park Avenue building, which houses global firms such as investor Blackstone and the National Football League.
No motive has been announced. A source told CNN a suicide note was found in Tamura’s pocket expressing grievances with the NFL and saying he suffered from CTE, a disease linked to head trauma. Tamura was a competitive football player in his youth. Investigators believe Tamura was headed for the NFL offices at the time of the shooting, but he took the wrong elevator, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said.
