On September 12th, 2022 Azerbaijani Armed Forces launched a major attack on sovereign territories of Armenia targeting not only military installations but also civilian settlements in the regions of Gegharkunik, Syunik and Vayots Dzor. The attack was the worst escalation since the end of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War which left 207 Armenian soldiers dead or missing, 273 injured, 3 civilian deaths and 20 POWs. Azerbaijan is currently occupying at least 215 square kilometers of Armenian territory and has not withdrawn its troops from internationally recognized Armenian territory despite calls to do so by the European Parliament, United States and France.

Kut village is located 4 km southeast of Sotk in Gegharkunik Province. It has seen some of the worst clashes not only in 2022 but also 2023.
