The winning artwork, titled "Portal #1," was created by Amina Agueznay. The Moroccan artist drew inspiration from traditional door patterns found in southern Morocco. Local women weaved the materials to bring this piece to life.

South African judge Ashraf Jamal takes notes on "Victims of Existence II" by Blessing Ngobeni.

Twenty-seven artworks were shortlisted for the final selection. As winner, Agueznay took home a $35,000 prize and a six-month art residency in London.

Each artwork tells a story from the African continent, including "Colonial Product 10" by Zimbabwean sculptor Moffat Takadiwa.

Shortlisted works have been put up for auction, hosted by Sotheby's. The auction will run until February 20, with proceeds split between artists and the Norval Foundation Learning Centre.

Based in Cape Town, the learning center engages with disadvantaged children in South Africa, teaching them through art and providing other life skills.

On Agueznay's work, judge Ashraf Jamal said: "After hours of deep reflection the jury stayed true to the greater goal of the prize - the choice of an artist with an enduring vision of the lives and triumphs of women of the African desert."

All of the artwork will be on display at an exhibition at the Norval Foundation museum in Cape Town until May 12.
