Jon Stewart returned as host of "The Daily Show" on Monday night.

The comedian, who hosted the Comedy Central program for 16 years and established it as an entertainment and cultural force, will be leading the show every Monday. He will also be an executive producer and work with a rotating lineup of comedians who will host the rest of the week.

"Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show' to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season," Chris McCarthy, chief executive of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement last month.

Stewart gained acclaim on "The Daily Show" for his sharp humor, which was deployed to deliver stinging — and hilarious — monologues often aimed at exposing the hypocrisy of politicians.

He left the show in 2015 and signed a deal with Apple to host a show for its streaming service, but that show abruptly came to an end last year.
