
Epic OneWater Brew is made with recycled wastewater from Fifteen Fifty, a 40-story luxury apartment building in San Francisco. It was produced by Epic Cleantec, a company that produces water recycling systems for buildings.

Epic Cleantec's water recycling system isn't intended to produce drinking water. Instead, water from showers, toilets and washing machines is treated to make it safe to use in applications like toilet flushing, irrigation and laundry. Some places have been recycling water for decades. Murcia, located in a dry region of southwest Spain, has built an extensive system of treatment plants to clean sewage water, allowing it to be used to irrigate farmland. In May, Spain announced that €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion) would be spent on infrastructure to double the use of treated wastewater in urban areas, and to build desalination plants.

In the 1960s NASA worked on a device to purify recycled water for astronauts to drink, using silver ions to kill off bacteria. The technology has since been used across the world for drinking water and in swimming pools. The PentaPure brand system was used to purify water on Space Shuttle missions and is now used in homes and disaster relief efforts.

In June, NASA revealed that it had been able to recover 98% of the water that astronauts take along to the International Space Station (ISS). The Environmental Control and Life Support System aboard the ISS includes a Urine Processor Assembly that recovers water from urine using vacuum distillation. With water scarcity an increasing problem, finding new ways to source water is becoming a priority in many places. These "fog catchers" on a mountain in Ovalle, Chile, use nets to trap moisture in the air. Together with other fog catchers in the area, they are capable of harvesting more than 500,000 liters (132,000 US gallons) of water annually.

While Epic Cleantec made its beer from recycled wastewater, Chile's Atrapaniebla brewery makes this beer using water collected by the fog catchers.
