US lawmakers were racing the clock this week to pass a bill that will suspend the nation's debt limit through January 1, 2025.

President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill Friday after it passed the House on Wednesday and the Senate on Thursday.

The timeframe to pass the bill was extremely tight and there was little room for error, putting enormous pressure on leadership in both parties. June 5 is the date when the Treasury Department has said it will no longer be able to pay all of the nation's obligations in full and on time.

The effort to secure a debt limit deal has proven to be a major leadership test for both Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Suspending the debt limit through 2025 takes the threat of default off the table until after the presidential election.

Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

Russia is blaming Ukraine for launching the drone attack, which reportedly left two people injured and several buildings damaged. Ukraine has denied direct involvement.
