Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced Tuesday he is suspending his presidential campaign after a weak showing in the Iowa caucuses on Monday night.

"I congratulate Donald J. Trump for his win last night in Iowa and to the other candidates who competed and garnered delegate support," Hutchinson said in a statement. "Today, I am suspending my campaign for President and driving back to Arkansas."

Hutchinson was twice elected governor of Arkansas. He ended his second term in January 2023, freeing him up to pursue a White House bid.

Hutchinson has had an extensive career in government. He was a member of Congress from 1997 to 2001, and he served in the George W. Bush administration. He has also been a federal prosecutor.

As governor, Hutchinson oversaw the enactment of tax cuts and legislation that instituted a near-total ban on abortion once Roe v. Wade was overturned. He also expanded computer-science education in schools and overhauled the state's Medicaid expansion program.
