US Rep. Elise Stefanik has replaced fellow congresswoman Liz Cheney as chair of the House Republican Conference.
That makes her the third-ranking Republican in the House, and its top-ranking woman.
Stefanik has served New York's 21st congressional district since 2015. She was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she was elected at the age of 30. That record has since been broken by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was 29 when she was elected.
Stefanik has a far less conservative voting record than Cheney, but she has been a loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump, who many House Republicans still see as a crucial part of their quest to win back a majority. Cheney has been outspoken against Trump and was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him earlier this year.
