Steve Bullock, who has been Montana's governor since 2013, ended his presidential campaign on December 2.

"While there were many obstacles we could not have anticipated when entering this race, it has become clear that in this moment, I won't be able to break through to the top tier of this still-crowded field of candidates," the Democrat said in a statement to CNN.

Bullock announced his campaign in May, outlining a plan to push progressive policies from his red-state perspective. He wanted to focus on his Montana roots and his ability to reach out to Republican voters.

Before he was governor, Bullock was the state's attorney general. He has also worked for the Montana secretary of state and Montana's Department of Justice.

Bullock is a lifelong Montanan who graduated from Helena High School. "I wouldn't be where I am today without the teachers at Helena High who inspired me to make a difference," Bullock tweeted this year for Teacher Appreciation Week. "Now, I'm sending my three kids to those same schools I went to."

After graduating high school, Bullock attended Claremont McKenna College in California and got a law degree from Columbia Law School in New York.

Bullock was raised by a single mother, Penny Clark. She and Bullock's father, Mike, divorced when he was young.
