Violent protests have gripped the country of Haiti since February 7.

Demonstrators have been calling for President Jovenel Moise to resign over corruption allegations and soaring inflation. Protesters have clashed with police on the streets, cars have been set ablaze and several people have been killed.

The protests began on the second anniversary of Moise's election. He has so far rejected calls to step down, promising instead "a wide range of measures" for economic relief.

Haitian Police Chief Michel-Ange Gédéon told CNN that eight individuals, including five Americans, are being held for what he described as possession of illegal weapons. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Henry Ceant <a href="index.php?page=&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2019%2F02%2F20%2Famericas%2Fhaiti-detainees-prime-minister-allegation-intl%2Findex.html" target="_blank">has accused them</a> of being "terrorists" on a mission to destabilize his government. CNN was not permitted to speak to the men in detention.
