Before he was born, Johnna Kerres' son, Everett, had a new procedure to close the spina bifida lesions on his back. The Kerreses hope to use their picture of mom and son to spread awareness of spina bifida and the medical advances around it.

After the in-utero procedure, Everett Kerres was born in September at 39 weeks.

Aside from a clubfoot that's being treated with orthotics, Everett is "doing phenomenal," Johnna Kerres said. "He's a very healthy baby."

"He's got full movement of his legs; he's kicking his legs like crazy, so to see that is just a miracle every day," Johnna Kerres said.

With the exception of the orthotics for his foot, "you would never know looking at him and the way he acts that there is or was anything wrong with him," dad Adam Kerres said. The couple wants their son to have "as normal life as possible, and he's gonna be better for his situation in the long run."
