More than 50 protesters were detained Monday after trying to enter the secure perimeter around the Wells Fargo Center, the arena where the convention is taking place. "They'd made it pretty clear they were intending to get arrested," van Agtmael said. "To what end, I'm not sure."

Although the police boxed the protesters off, the scene resolved peacefully and the protesters continued to march.

Protesters stand outside the perimeter of the convention. The arena and convention hub are blocked off by heavy fences, keeping demonstrators from coming into contact with delegates and attendees.

The Democratic National Committee's leaked emails have emboldened the dozens of protest groups who made their way into the city for four days of marches, rallies and demonstrations.
