M-KOPA Solar provides solar power solutions for lighting, radios and other appliances for people who live off the electricity grid in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The company has launched a solar-powered TV set, developed for areas where low energy consumption is crucial. So far 5,000 TV sets has been sold and they estimate that "millions of homes" will have the set within the next few years.

The TV connects to Kenya's digital television network and has around 30 free channels.

Only 30% of Kenyans have a television at home, and a large number live in remote areas where they use power sources such as kerosene, car batteries and generators.

Using a mobile payment system, customers pay about $1.25 a day for one to two years, as well as an initial deposit.

A woman lights up the compound as her husband fixes a loose screw on his motorbike. The lamp is powered by a solar panel which they have bought on M-KOPA's payment plan.
