Akosua Busia has had a diverse career since starring as Nettie Harris in "The Color Purple." In addition to acting roles including on the NBC drama "E.R.," she co-wrote the screenplay for the 1998 film adaptation of Toni Morrison's "Beloved." EW reported that Busia, who is Ghanaian royalty and the ex-wife of director John Singleton, complained of behind-the-scenes friction regarding the script.

Adolph Caesar was nominated for a best supporting actor Academy Award for his role in the 1984 film "A Soldier's Story," in which he reprised his role from the hit Broadway play. His role as Old Mister Johnson in "The Color Purple" was one of his last on the big screen; he died of a heart attack in 1986.

Rae Dawn Chong had the role of Squeak, Harpo's girlfriend. Chong, the daughter of comic actor Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong fame, went on to appear in films like "Commando" and TV shows like "Melrose Place" and "Deadly Skies."
