Three-year-old Darnal Mundy II and his mother, Dorphise Jean, before the night Darnal accidentally shot himself in the head.

Somehow Darnal had gotten out of his parents' bed, climbed a chair in front of his dad's dresser, opened the top drawer, grabbed a gun and shot himself in the face.

Darnal spent three weeks in a coma, and when he woke up, he was barely responsive.

At the rehabilitation hospital, Darnal receives at least three hours of therapy every day. He has learned how to breathe on his own again and slowly started talking and walking.

After weeks of intensive therapy, Darnal is slowly regaining control of his body.

Jenny Rey-Garcia, speech therapist at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, works with Darnal.
