Megan Duckett is the founder of Sew What, L.A.'s premier theatrical draping company which provides concert backdrops for A-list musicians like the rock band KISS, John Legend and Rod Stewart.

She had worked in the entertainment business and event planning for several years before a chance request put her sewing skills to test, and she started thinking it was something she could make a living from.

The Australian decided to leave her day job when it became clear she was earning more from her sewing hobby.

She admits that starting out as an independent business owner was frightening, and that thinking about her company occasionally still keeps her up at night.

However, Duckett says the best part of owning your own business is the autonomy it brings to make your own decisions and shape its future.

She credits her success with finding a niche in the market for theatrical backdrops: "There was nothing and nobody being particularly creative, creating the custom-made elements," she says. "With a little creativity and the incentive to go digging around to find the clients, I knew that there was an opportunity there," Duckett adds.

Having started as a one-woman-band, Duckett today employs 35 people.

Today, 18 years after its founding, Sew What's revenue Is closing in on $7 million.
