Feminist Xiao Meili started female armpit hair photo contest on the Chinese social network Weibo. Her goal: To start a conversation about gender inequality.

Ending Wednesday, the contest attracted more than 40 participants, who shared photos of themselves with arms raised, natural hair underneath.

Zheng Churan, one of five Chinese feminists who drew international attention after getting arrested in March for planning an anti-sexual harassment protest, says she stopped shaving after learning about feminism. She said she regretted removing it again recently—newly growing hair is as tough as bristle.

Wei Tingting, who was also arrested in March, joined her friends, showing off underarm hair along the Zhujiang River in Guangzhou.

Contest participant Chacha captioned her photo on Weibo: I love my armpit hair. It's part of my body. I hope girls can show off their armpit hair without fear.

Contest organizer Xiao says winners of the competition will be awarded with condoms, vibrators and pedestal urinals.
