Jean Claude Niyonzima, a suspected member of the ruling party's Imbonerakure youth militia, pleads with soldiers to protect him from a mob after he came out of hiding in a sewer in the Cibitoke district of Bujumbura, Burundi, on Thursday, May 7. Niyonzima fled from his house into the sewer under a hail of stones thrown by a mob protesting President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to seek a third term in office.

Niyonzima pleads for his life as he is surrounded at his house by demonstrators. At least one protester has died in clashes with the widely feared Imbonerakure militias and police, sending scores into the streets seeking revenge. The Imbonerakure is the youth wing of the ruling party. It is said by opponents to be armed and brutal as it works to help President Pierre Nkurunziza win a third term.
