"The hills are alive ..." It's been 50 years since the 1965 film "The Sound of Music" was released. The classic, based on the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical about the von Trapp family, won five Oscars and became one of the top-grossing films of all time. But what happened to the cast members? Though Julie Andrews, who played Maria, had a few bumps in the late '60s, the famed actress had a hugely successful career after "Music." She starred in such films as "10" and "Victor/Victoria" (both directed by her husband, Blake Edwards), "The Princess Diaries" and did voice work for two "Shrek" films. The 79-year-old actress lost her singing voice, however, after an operation in 1997. She has received a number of awards, including being named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2000.

Christopher Plummer, who played Captain von Trapp, went back and forth between film and theater after "Music." He won a Tony for "Cyrano" in 1973 and an Oscar for "Beginners" in 2012. Other film roles for the 85-year-old include "The Man Who Would be King," "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," "12 Monkeys" and "Syriana."

Charmian Carr, 72, who played Liesl von Trapp, followed "Music" with a TV movie in 1966 opposite Anthony Perkins. She's since become an interior designer and has written two books about Liesl. On her website she calls the other actors her "second family."

Nicholas Hammond, 64, played Friedrich von Trapp. More than a decade later, he put on Spider-Man's suit for a short-lived CBS series about the webslinger. He's guested on a number of series, including "Dallas," "Magnum, P.I." and "Murder, She Wrote."

Heather Menzies Urich, who played Louisa von Trapp, appeared in a handful of movies, including 1978's "Piranha," and a number of TV series. Some of those appearances were on "S.W.A.T.," "Vega$" and "Spenser for Hire," all of which starred her late husband, Robert Urich. Menzies Urich, now 65, remains active with the Robert Urich Foundation, which funds cancer research.

Duane Chase, 64, left moviemaking not long after "The Sound of Music." Chase, who played Kurt, joined the U.S. Forest Service, later got a degree in geology -- a fascination since his visit to Austria for the movie -- and now designs software.

Angela Cartwright, 62, played Brigitta in "The Sound of Music." She soon joined the cast of "Lost in Space," made appearances on such shows as "My Three Sons" and "Adam-12," and then turned to photography and design.

Debbie Turner, 58, played Marta. However, except for a small part in "North Dallas Forty," she's devoted her career to floral design. Based in Minnesota, her company, Debbie Turner Originals, has been recognized for its work by a number of organizations.

Kym Karath, who played Gretl, had guest spots in a number of TV series, including "The Brady Bunch" and "Archie Bunker's Place." The 56-year-old later co-founded an organization for children with special needs, the Aurelia Foundation.

Eleanor Parker, who played Baroness Schraeder in "Music," had a long and varied Hollywood career that included three Oscar nominations. Her films included "Of Human Bondage," "The Man With the Golden Arm" and "A Hole in the Head." After "Music," she mainly did television, with appearances on "Hawaii Five-O" and "Hotel." Parker died in 2013 at age 91.
