Bright future —
Cameroonian entrepreneur Alain Nteff, seen in this picture with a mother and her baby, is the founder of a startup is fighting to eradicate maternal and infant mortality across the country.

Life-saving information —
Gifted Mom is a subscription service which sends text messages to expectant and new mothers in rural communities with advice on antenatal and postnatal care.

Raising awareness —
Cameroon has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, and the majority of women don't get any follow-up care after delivering a baby. With Gifted Mom, Nteff says that he is trying to help educate women about how to look after themselves and their infants.

Practical advice —
Through Gifted Mom women can get answers to specific heath questions, as well as reminders about when they should take their baby for vaccination, or when their next check-up is due.

Difficult roads —
Much of the maternal health problem lies in the inaccessibility of healthcare in rural parts of the country, with hospitals few and far between and difficult to reach due to inadequate roads. Seen here is a car in which Gifted Mom volunteers were traveling to a remote village in order to raise awareness of the service.

Long way to go —
Improving maternal health has been one of U.N.'s Millennium Development Goals, but a woman is nearly 100 times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth in sub-Saharan Africa than in the developed world.
