Lunar mission —
The Africa2Moon Mission aims to send a probe to the lunar surface within a decade. Jonathan Weltman (pictured), chief executive of the Foundation for Space Development South Africa, says the project will help raise the profile of science across the continent.

Aiming high —
The project aims to raise $150,000 by the end of January to ensure the first stage goes ahead.

Project backing —
Afirca2Moon has the backing of a number of South African universities, the South African Space Association and aerospace group Space Commercial Service Holdings, who are looking to develop a hypersatellite named Phoenix-20 HS. Here, an artist's impression of The Phoenix in orbit.

Space race —
A digital impression of the Square Kilometer Array shows how some of its 3,000 dishes would look on site in South Africa's Karoo desert. This will be the largest and most powerful radio telescope on earth when it comes online, with construction set to begin in 2018.

Night vision —
The ambitious project aims to build a giant radio telescope that will help scientists paint a detailed picture of some of the deepest reaches of outer space.

Knowledge and exploration —
Scientists hope to use the phenomenally powerful SKA to learn more about the likes of distant stars, galaxies, quasars, dark matter and black holes.

Unearthing secrets —
There's also the exciting possibility of capturing information on how the universe evolved in its earliest moments.
