Oracle, skippered by James Spithill, produced one of the greatest comebacks ever seen in sport last September when they beat Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 to successfully defend the America's Cup. At one stage the U.S. team trailed 1-8.

Emirates Team New Zealand will be looking for revenge in 2017 but will have to earn the right to race the U.S. boat again in a series of races against four other crews from Britain, France, Sweden and Italy. The challengers will race each other during 2015 and 2016. The Kiwi boat's skipper Dean Barker said in a statement: "We have been working quietly behind the scenes towards this day almost since the last day of the 34th America's Cup. Now the real work begins."

The four-time Olympic champion said in a statement: "We are delighted that Royal Yacht Squadron Racing's challenge for the 35th America's Cup has been officially accepted."
