A major early defeat in Robinson's career was against Jake LaMotta on February 5, 1943. Here, LaMotta knocks Robinson through the ropes in the eighth round. LaMotta won the decision in 10 rounds to give Robinson his first defeat in 130 fights, 41 of which were pro. It was the only time LaMotta beat Robinson in the six times they fought.
