Lady Mary Crawley dances with soon-to-be fiance Matthew. This elegant shot silk dress is on view in "Costumes of Downton Abbey," an exhibition at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware. The engagement scene from the show is projected alongside the display of the dress and Matthew's evening wear.

The delicate cotton print of Lady Cybil's dress "looks so '60s," said Linda Eaton, Winterthur's senior curator of textiles. "These things keep coming around. They get reinterpreted but the core designs just keep coming around and coming around and coming around."

Servants' clothes do vary by occasion and time of day. Here Anna is dressed for an afternoon garden party in a more elaborate apron and cap than she would usually wear.

Carson wears a white waist coat and a white tie similar to those worn by Lord Grantham. Differentiating the butler from the gentlemen was all about the quality of the cloth and tailoring, said Jeff Groff, one of the exhibition curators. Mrs. Hughes' silhouettes are similar to those worn by the Dowager Countess but much plainer and simpler.
