Perez Art Museum Miami —
Pérez Art Museum Miami is in downtown Miami and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, best known for converting the Bankside Power Station in London to the new home of the Tate Modern.

The museum is named after billionaire real-estate developer Jorge Pérez, who donated $40 million, half made up from his private art collection, to the museum. It's one of the few major institutions in the United States with a Hispanic name.

Hanging from every side of the museum are 70 self-watering hydroponic gardens, designed by French landscape artist Patrick Blanc.

The three-story building sits on an elevated platform and below a canopy, both of which extend far beyond the museum's walls, creating a shaded veranda and plazas. A set of stairs the width of the museum links the building to the bay walk in Museum Park.

Working with local and international landscape designers and horticulturists, the architects use this space to "bring the park into the museum" in new and innovative ways.

The permanent collection galleries are on the first and, principally, the second level, which also house extensive temporary exhibition galleries.

Transparency on the first and third levels of the galleries reveal the public and semi-public functions within: the entry halls, auditorium, shop and café on the first level and the education center and staff offices on the third.

While mainly oriented inward so as to focus on the art, the second floor galleries incorporate carefully placed windows to allow for natural light and views of the surrounding park and bay.

PAMM has brought together some of Miami's most significant private collectors with highlights from its own young collection to create a two-year cycle of changing thematic installations collectively titled "AMERICANA," an English and Spanish word that broadly describes images and objects produced in the Americas and typical of American cultures.

In this first exhibition cycle, "AMERICANA" includes art produced in South America, North America, and the Caribbean presented in the form of six short visual essays, each offering a critical perspective on a set of related issues in modern culture and society of particular interest to progressive artists.

The design allows for multiple transitions, as visitors gradually move from the outside to the inside, hot to cold, humid to dry, and from the street or park to the art.

The museum has opened its doors to Miami-Dade schools to foster a broader appreciation and understanding of art. Here, Jorge Pérez poses with a group of 3rd graders visiting the museum.
