While trying to rescue people trapped in their hotel, a piece of sheet metal inflicted a deep gash in Mark Thomas' right leg. It was hastily bandaged but the team feared it would soon become infected by dirty floodwater.

The team caught a flight from Tacloban to Cebu after trying to find a way out of the devastaated city. Reynolds said the atmosphere aboard the C-310 was somber as survivors sat on the ground alongside four body bags.

The storm chasers only managed to board the flight after catching a helicopter from a military staging post to Tacloban airport. The roads had been blocked by debris, turning the airport from a short drive away into a potential seven-hour trek.
