Mike Landsberry (pictured), a math teacher at the school, was killed in the shooting, Sparks Mayor Geno Martini told CNN. In addition to his work as a teacher, Landsberry also had served in the Marines, including several tours in Afghanistan, his brother, Reggie, told "Anderson Cooper 360."

The suspect in the shooting is also dead, said Washoe County School District Police Chief Mike Mieras. Authorities said it was too soon to say whether the suspect was killed by a self-inflicted wound or by law enforcement.

Authorities said students were being taken to a nearby high school to meet their parents. School has been canceled for the week at both the elementary and middle schools, officials said.
