Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier who leaked 750,000 pages of classified documents to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, released a statement on August 22 saying, "I am a female." Here are a few other public figures who are transgender or transsexual.

Chaz Bono —
Chaz Bono is probably the most recognizable advocate for the transgender and transsexual population. Bono was born Chasity Bono to Cher and Sonny Bono. He began transitioning from female to male in 2009.

Isis King —
Isis King was the first transgender model to appear on "America's Next Top Model." She has also appeared in American Apparel ads, according to E! Online.

Jenna Talackova —
Jenna Talackova was originally disqualified from Canada's Miss Universe pageant because she used to be male. The organization changed its mind in April 2012 and announced it would be ending its ban on transgender contestants.

Alexis Arquette —
Actress Alexis Arquette, sister to David and Patricia Arquette, was born a boy. She appeared in the 1998 film "The Wedding Singer" as George.

Lea T —
Brazilian model Lea T is well known in the fashion world as an "out and proud" transsexual, according to The Guardian. Born Leandro, Lea T has appeared in Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair, among others.

Thomas Beatie —
Thomas Beatie, right, made headlines as "the pregnant man" when he gave birth to his daughter, Susan, in 2008. Beatie wrote a book about his experience called "Labor of Love: The Story of One Man's Extraordinary Pregnancy."

Candis Cayne —
Candis Cayne was born Brendan McDaniel in Hawaii. The actress is best known for her role as Carmelita on "Dirty Sexy Money."
