Supporters of President Barack Obama's signature health care legislation celebrate after the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Healthcare Act on June 28.

Aimee Copeland and flesh-eating bacteria —
Flesh-eating bacteria patient Aimee Copeland goes outside Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, for the first time with her parents, Andy and Donna Copeland, on June 25. Copeland was discharged from the hospital in August after a three-month-ordeal.

Multistate fungal meningitis outbreak —
More than 600 people were sickened and 39 people died in 19 states from non-contagious fungal meningitis. The cases were linked to injectable steroids distributed by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

West Nile Virus outbreak —
2012 saw the second-worst outbreak ever for West Nile Virus, with 5,387 cases and 243 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's last update of the year. The worst-ever outbreak was in 2003, when 9,862 illnesses and 264 deaths were reported.

Robin Roberts' bone marrow transplant —
"Good Morning America" host Robin Roberts, 51, underwent a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome. Roberts found a bone marrow match in her sister, Sally-Ann.

Hantavirus at Yosemite —
Eight campers at Yosemite National Park contracted hantavirus, and three died. Warnings were sent to visitors from 39 other countries in September. Most became ill with the rare virus after staying at the park's popular Curry Village "tent cabins."

Jesse Jackson Jr. and bipolar disorder —
Jackson took a leave of absence in June to undergo treatment at the Mayo Clinic for bipolar II disorder. Despite winning re-election, he resigned from office in November, citing health reasons.

Autism statistics spike in last decade —
According to its most recent data available, from 2008, 1 in 88 children has some form of autism spectrum disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rate was higher for boys -- 1in 54 -- the agency said.

Kathy Bates' double mastectomy —
Actress Kathy Bates underwent a double mastectomy in September after being diagnosed with breast cancer in July, a publicist said. Bates, 64, also battled ovarian cancer eight years ago.

Ex-hospital worker accused in hepatitis C outbreak —
A man who worked as a traveling medical technician on a contract basis for hospitals in a handful of states was arrested in July and accused of spreading hepatitis C, sickening more than 30 people. David Kwiatkowski, 33, was indicted last month by a federal grand jury in New Hampshire.
