Survival pods —
Chinese villager Liu Qiyuan, pictured here on December 11, has constructed six survival pods that can be used in the event of tsunamis and earthquakes.

Carbon fiber —
Each pod consists of a carbon fiber shell wrapped around a steel frame.

Unique decor —
Liu and his daughter sit inside one of the pods. The pods seat 14 people each and have varying interiors.

Emergency exit —
Liu climbs out of one of the pods that are sitting in his yard

Built to float —
A worker looks at the pods. The spheres are airtight and can float on water.

Doomsday —
The project was partly inspired by the apocalyptic Hollywood movie '2012' and the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Rescue vessels? —
Liu hopes that governments and international organisations will adopt his pods for use in the event of natural disasters.

Team work —
Fours workers team up to re-position one of the survival pods.

Pod builder —
Liu stands among his pods, which he built in his yard in the village of Qiantun in China's Hebei province.
