Fiber optic cable —
A submarine fiber-optic cable emerges off the coast of Nigeria to help bridge the digital divide in the continent. Terrestrial connection methods such as this are more costly and cumbersome than satellite powered coverage.

Mobile phone shop —
Around 31 million Africans have mobile broadbrand subscriptions, and 3G coverage continues to grow in urban areas. Mobile operators say satellite technology will ensure more rural regions don't get left behind.

Mobile banking —
Peter Lyons of GSMA said rolling out 3G services to remote regions would allow people, previously without bank accounts, to use financial services. In Kenya Mpesa enables users to transfer money quickly using text messaging.

Reaching a new generation —
Lyons describes wider broadband coverage as good news for younger generations; opening up educational resources that were previously unreachable.
