Mallory Weggemann is a U.S. Paralympic swimmer who turned to the sport after a routine epidural in 2008 left her paralyzed from the waist down.

From disaster to triumph —
Despite being switched into a more difficult category at the London 2012 Games, Weggemann sealed a shock gold medal in the S8 50m freestyle event.

The end of a journey —
The Minnesota native says winning a gold medal felt like the end of what had been a long journey.

Relay success —
In addition to her individual success, Weggemann also won a bronze medal as part of the the American 4 x 100m medley relay 34 points.
