Five female artists with pulling power —
Christie's last contemporary art auction was dominated by female artists. The most expensive work sold was a dot painting by Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, which went for more than $1 million.

Louise Bourgeois, who died in 2010, holds the record for the highest-priced work by a female artist. One of her bronze spider sculptures sold for $10.7m last year. Another sold for $4.5m in May.

Cindy Sherman has made four of the five most expensive photographs auctioned by Christie's London, and has made nearly $2 million in sales since 2010. She was the subject of a major retrospective at MoMA this year.

Female artists also sell well online -- among the top 10 bestsellers for print retailer Exhibition 8 is Kim Gordon, who also co-founded alternative rock band Sonic Youth.

"Rose II," a 28-foot-tall sculpture by German artist Isa Genzken on display at the New Museum in New York. Over the past seven years, around 46% of the New Museum's solo shows have been by women.
