
Tian Shan Mountains —
Asel Shilikbayeva of Manchester, England, was in flight to Almaty when she took this photo of the sun setting behind the Tian Shan Mountains. "The view of the mountains lit by the fiery red sky and the green landscape was breathtaking," she says.

Modern monuments —
"Astana's newest monument, the Khan Shatyr, is a giant, transparent, tent-shaped shopping center located in the heart of the capital city," says iReporter Josh May. He took this picture when he visited Kazakhstan in April 2011 and says he "enjoyed the beautiful scenery and hospitality throughout the country."

Tian Shan Observatory —
Josh May captured this image when he visited the site of the Tian Shan Observatory en route to the Big Almaty Lake, just south of the Kazakh capital. "It's not difficult to get there and I highly recommend it," he says. "The surrounding scenery was lush, dramatic and inspiring... certainly worth seeing!"

Local cuisine —
Kuanysh Tulendiyev sent this picture of a freshly served dish of Beshbarmak, one of Kazakhstan's culinary specialties, as he believes it reflects an important part of his country's national identity. "Traditional dishes are reflections of culture," he says. "(Beshbarmak) is made traditionally with horsemeat. It is considered as a dish for respected guests."

Traditional tents —
A more traditional example of a Kazakh tent (or yurt as they are locally known) was captured by Russell Solomon when he visited the cities of Shymkent and Turkestan in 2006.

Jazzystan festival —
The Jazzystan festival in Almaty is the biggest music event not only in Kazakhstan but in all of central Asia, says concert organizer and iReoprter Rustam Ospanov. More than 100 musicians and DJs have performed at Jazzystan since 2009 and artists have come from as far afield as the USA, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Sweden, Croatia and France to take part, he explains.

Pavlodar mosque —
"The architecture of the Mashkhur Jusup Central Mosque in Pavlodar is famed for its similarity in appearance to the Star Wars films character Darth Vader," says Josh May who snapped this image in April 2011.

The Kazakh steppe —
An American living in Kazakhstan, Jon-Paul Perea captured this image in the picturesque rural setting of Aksu Zhabagly, just outside of the southern city of Shymkent. "I took this photo because I wanted to show the donkey cart full of hay traveling down a road far from any town or village to emphasize that even among the natural beauty of the steppe, life is extremely difficult," he says.

Borovoye Lake —
Ian Cilia of Malta captured this image of the peaceful Borovoye Lake situated to the north of Kokshetau Oblast whilst visiting Kazakhstan in 2010. "(I) sent in this picture because the lakes and countryside were the bits which impressed me most about (the country)," he says. "What struck me about Kazakhstan was the natural beauty, the contrasts and the authenticity of the experience," he adds.
