'President Donald Trump has signed a bill to reopen key parts of the Department of Homeland Security including critical agencies like TSA. DHS has been shut down since mid-February, but today the House ended the standoff by passing the Senate's funding package, which includes no money for federal immigration enforcement, a major win for Democrats. Today's move caps weeks of drama on Capitol Hill, with Republicans choosing not to take a recorded vote on the measure that has sharply divided their party. Here's how Speaker Mike Johnson responded when asked why the House didn't pass the bill sooner.
Speaker Mike Johnson
00:00:39
You heard me trash the bill when it came over the first time because it literally was drafted in the middle of the night. It was about two o'clock in the morning when they came up with the final language and it was haphazardly drafted. And what it would do is of course orphan and leave out immigration enforcement and border patrol.

Republicans will try to fund immigration enforcement without Democratic votes using a complex budget maneuver.

More news coming up, including another heated Capitol Hill debate over the Iran war.

The gas will go down. As soon as the war's over, it'll drop like a rock. There's so much of it. It's all over the place, sitting all over the oceans of the world. And it'll go down."

President Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office today about a variety of topics, including U.S. gas prices, which is now $4.30 for a gallon of regular, the highest since 2022, according to data from AAA. Brent crude oil prices surpassed $126 a barrel, its highest price in four years before falling to nearly $116 a barrel earlier today. A source says the president is expected to hear about updated military options for Iran from Pentagon officials as he pressures Tehran to make a deal.
President Donald Trump
00:01:53
I mean, Iran is dying to make a deal. I can only tell you that. I don't want to get into the — but they cannot be nuclear.

Trump suggested that the negotiations are advancing despite the public appearance of a standstill. Iran's supreme leader doubled down on his uncompromising vision for the region. Trump also criticized Congress' efforts to limit his war powers, the latest of which the Senate rejected this afternoon. And during a Senate hearing today, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the administration doesn't need war powers approval from Congress because a potential legal deadline to notify it stops due to the ongoing ceasefire. Hegseth also got into a tense exchange with Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand over the war's growing unpopularity.

I'm proud of the opportunity to remind the American people because they believe in it as well. You don't care whether the American's people support this war. The American people are quite smart. They understand and see through spin.

Louisiana Republicans have delayed the May 16 primaries for U.S. House. This comes one day after the Supreme Court struck down the state's congressional map, calling it unconstitutional gerrymander. Early voting was scheduled to start Saturday and overseas ballots had already gone out. The secretary of state said no votes cast and the House races will count, though they will remain on the May16 ballot. She said the primaries, for other races, will continue. A Democratic representative said the state governor had told him he anticipated issuing an executive order to suspend the House election and call a new one. The representative told CNN he expects a court challenge to the move. Leaders of the Louisiana Legislature said they are now preparing to draw a new map and set a new date for the U.S. House primary election.

Camp Mystic, the Texas Christian girls' camp where 27 campers and counselors died torrential flooding last year says it's dropping plans to reopen this summer. This follows mounting pressure from victims' families and state leaders to keep the camp closed. Camp owners had explored options to reopen only part of the camp, despite multiple ongoing criminal and civil inquiries, including a wrongful death lawsuit. Earlier this month, a judge said she would issue an order requiring camp leaders to preserve cabins and land affected by the flooding. Investigators have said that camp owners failed to build a flash flood evacuation plan, hold drills, or give camp counselors any serious training in preparation for a major weather event. The decision to abandon reopening plans was welcomed by families of the children and counselors who died at the camp.

Coming up, farewell to the Royals.

'King Charles and Queen Camilla wrapped up their four-day state visit to the U.S. today. They attended a block party in Virginia after getting a formal farewell from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House this morning. The royal couple also paid their respects at Arlington National Cemetery. Meanwhile, King Charles, who loves nature, visited Shenandoah National Park, about 75 miles from Washington, D.C. Following the King and Queen's state visit, Trump said the U.S. will remove tariffs on some Scottish whiskey, which currently faces 10% tariffs.
