
Bayern Munich fans were in optimistic mood as their side took on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal. Bayern, which last won the trophy in 2013, trailed 1-0 from the first leg.

Bayern took the attack to its Spanish opponent from the first minute with Thomas Muller in the thick of the action.

Robert Lewandowski, the Bayern striker, hardly had a kick in the first game but he caused plenty of problems for the Atletico defense in the opening stages.

Bayern, having dominated the first half, finally found a way through when Xabi Alonso's free kick was deflected past Jan Oblak in the Bayern goal.

Bayern was dominating and a foul by Jose Gimenez on Javi Martinez led to the home side being awarded a penalty. Muller took the penalty but his effort was turned away brilliantly by Oblak.

Pep Guardiola, who is set to join Manchester City at the end of the season, watched on as his team laid siege to the Atletico goal.

Atletico had hardly managed to create a meaningful attack in the opening period but it hit back just eight minutes after the interval. Fernando Torres released Antoine Griezmann and the forward fired home a crucial away goal.

Trailing 2-1 on aggregate, Bayern threw everything at the Atletico defense and Lewandowski scored a dramatic header with 16 minutes remaining to level the tie.

With Bayern piling forward in search of a winner, Atletico was given a wonderful opportunity to put the tie out of sight when Fernando Torres was awarded a penalty. The foul appeared to have taken place outside of the area and Manuel Neuer produced a wonderful save to deny the forward.

Atletico held out in the end to book its place in the final for the second time in three seasons on away goals as the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate.
