Chiellini was not the first player Suarez had bit. During his time with Ajax Amsterdam, he earned a seven-game ban for biting a PSV Eindhoven player in 2010. While with Liverpool, he missed a further 10 matches after biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in 2013.

In 2002, Australian rules player Peter Filandia was suspended for 10 matches after pleading guilty to biting an opponent's testicles. The incident occurred as Filandia's Port Melbourne played Springvale in the Victorian Football League. The victim suffered a perforated scrotum, with Filandia telling a tribunal that he bit as a reflex action after becoming trapped in a melee.
