Hey, from CNN, I'm Ifeoma Dike with the five things you need to know for Thursday, January 8th.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has authorized the state's National Guard to help support local law enforcement, and the lieutenant governor says they're on standby now. That's as protests erupted after an ICE agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis Wednesday. CNN's Laura Coates was on the scene outside a Minneapolis federal building where federal agents and protesters clashed.

I've got 40 or so ICE agents that are out here in the area. There is something that was in the hair, closet, and closet. They are retreating right now as the crowd is coming closer and closer.

The White House says it's standing behind the ICE officer in yesterday's shooting.
Vice President JD Vance

You have a woman who aimed her car at a law enforcement officer and pressed on the accelerator. Nobody debates that. I can believe that her death is a tragedy while also recognizing that it's a tragedy of her own making and a tragedy of the far left who has marshaled an entire movement, a lunatic fringe against our law enforcement officers.

'That's Vice President JD Vance during a White House press briefing earlier today. Multiple videos of the shooting reviewed by CNN show nuance, and exactly what took place before the shooting remains unclear. State and local officials have disputed claims that yesterday's shooting was in self-defense. And today, state officials say the feds have blocked them from investigating the shooting. A senior official at the Department of Homeland Security tells CNN that the officer has 10 years of experience with the agency. And that last summer, a driver dragged that officer more than 50 yards during an arrest.

Next week, the Senate is expected to vote on a bill that would limit President Donald Trump from taking military action in Venezuela without Congress's approval. That's after a handful of Republicans voted with the Democrats today to advance the measure. On Truth Social, Trump called on voters to, quote, "never" reelect the GOP senators. He also argued that the vote undermines national security and presidential authority. This comes days after the U.S. Captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife. They're being held in a federal jail in Brooklyn, New York, and have pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges.

Now to the latest blowback from the courts to nullify prosecutors President Trump has wanted to empower who haven't been confirmed by the Senate. Today, a federal judge ruled Trump's acting U.S. Attorney John Sarcone, who's investigating New York Attorney General Letitia James, is serving unlawfully. The ruling quashes grand jury subpoena Sarcón signed in August. The subpoena sought information on investigations James spearheaded and Trump opposed.

Back on Capitol Hill, the House is expected to vote to restore enhanced Obamacare subsidies that recently expired for millions of Americans. The measure is expected to get enough votes to pass with the help of a small block of centrist rebels who are fed up with Speaker Mike Johnson's stance on the matter. However, that bill will go nowhere in the Senate, where a small group of centrist Democrats and Republicans is working on a bill that it believes can actually win the 60 votes needed to pass. Federal dollars ran out on December 31st, with tens of millions of Americans now forced either into more expensive plans or to forego healthcare coverage altogether.

Coming up, Trump's solution to the affordability crisis.

'In a Truth Social post, President Trump says he's ordered, quote, "my representatives" to buy $200 billion in mortgage bonds. The goal is to drive down interest rates and monthly payments. He wrote Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two mortgage giants, are now worth, quote, "an absolute fortune" and have enough cash to fund the directive. Trump didn't specify who the representatives are or when or how the purchases would happen. Traditionally, the Federal Reserve has been the largest buyer of mortgage-backed securities. The central bank bought hundreds of billions of dollars worth of securities during the pandemic. And that helped contribute to ultra-low mortgage rates many Americans were able to lock in during those years.
