    Two Bombs Found In Manila

SYDNEY, Australia (AllPolitics, Nov. 20) -- Authorities have discovered two bombs in the Philippines on the eve of an 18-nation Pacific trade summit that President Bill Clinton is due to attend. One was found in a bag in the arrival area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, officials said. And U.S. officials traveling with President Bill Clinton confirmed reports from Subic Bay that a pipe bomb was found outside the front gate of the location where the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries are to meet this weekend. The device was found by a custodial employee of the facility and, like the airport bomb, was disarmed by police. Security officials are investigating its origins, amid one report it was actually part of a security exercise. White House officials point out that the pipe bomb was found outside the gate, not inside, leading them to be less concerned.

    What A Way With Words

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AllPolitics, Nov. 20) -- Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Calif.) always has used words like a sledgehammer. It's gotten even worse now that it appears he narrowly lost his bid for re-election. At a GOP meeting, Dornan angrily denounced a retired Marine colonel and fellow Republican for aiding Democrat Loretta Sanchez, the woman who apparently ousted Dornan. "You are a disgrace to your baptism!" Dornan shouted at William Dougherty. "You are a poor excuse for a Marine. You are a pathetic old senile man. You are a slimy coward. Go register in another party." Sanchez leads by 665 votes, and Dornan blames widespread voter fraud involving thousands of non-citizens.

    Garcetti Leading

LOS ANGELES (AllPolitics, Nov. 20) -- Los Angeles District Attorney Gil Garcetti, on the defensive for his office's handling of the O.J. Simpson murder case, still has a narrow lead in late returns from the Nov. 5 election. Garcetti declined comment until the vote counting is complete, but he has moved out to a 4,347-vote lead. Challenger John Lynch would have to get 58 to 61 percent of the remaining uncounted ballots, substantially more than the 49.9 percent share he has received so far.
