Legendary singer Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96, according to his longtime publicist, Sylvia Weiner.

Bennett won 19 Grammy Awards over a career spanning eight decades. After signing with Columbia Records in 1950, he began churning out a string of hits, including "Because of You" and "Rags to Riches."

But his signature song was his rendition of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," which won Grammys for best record and best male vocal performance. The song became so popular, and so associated with Bennett, that people would often ask if he ever got tired of singing it.

In a 2004 interview with CNN's Larry King, Bennett said he had managed to appeal to generations of fans by never changing his tune.

"Everything today is all demographic, you know. Everything is split up ... I never did that," Bennett said.

He said he modeled himself after "old masters" such as Jack Benny, Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney.

"They played to the whole family ... and so, if they hit, everybody bought it," he said.

Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in 1926. He said his dad "inspired my love of both art and music, and I owe much of my success to him."
